Alex Dixon Out as CEO in Latest Resorts World Las Vegas Shakeup

Resorts World Las Vegas announced Thursday that Alex Dixon is no longer the CEO. The board has appointed its COO/CFO, Carlos Castro, as his replacement. 

Castro, who was brought on in February, oversaw the casino as president and CFO, whereas Dixon, who started at Resorts World just two months prior, has been demoted to a senior advisor to the board of directors. 

“I want to personally thank each of you for your hard work and dedication,” board chair Jim Murren wrote in an all-staff memo sharing the news, which was obtained by Vital Vegas.

Murren stated that Castro is now “fully responsible for the strategy, leadership, and operations” of the casino resort, effective immediately. 

“He has already made a positive impact on the property by attracting top talent and realigning strategy, marketing, and operations,” Murren explained.

Dixon — prior to taking charge of Resorts World, was the CEO of the Q Casino & Resort and the Dubuque Racing Association in Iowa — was requested to depart “to best utilize our potential,” as stated in Murren’s memo. 

In his new position, Murren states that Dixon will “establish new strategic partnerships that will generate revenue and provide thrilling new offerings to our guests.” 

Not According to the Manual 

The massive red property at the northern end of the Strip faced an illegal betting scandal from 2023 until a resolution in March with a $10.5 million settlement — the second-highest fine in Las Vegas history — with the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB). 

From a technical standpoint, it was resolved solely at the state level, as the NGCB indicated it retains the right to seek additional disciplinary measures if federal authorities take action against the casino. 

Resorts World has experienced major staff changes following the scandal, such as the removal of ex-president and COO Scott Sibella in September 2023, the exit of executives Doni Taube and Richard Corbett in September 2024, and the appointments of Dixon and Castro. 

It established the board now led by Murren, the past chair of MGM Resorts International, along with former NGCB chair A.G. Burnett and ex-Nevada Governor and NGC chair Brian Sandoval. 

Last month, the casino resort revealed the appointment of its inaugural chief compliance officer, Jennifer Roberts, who now manages Resorts World’s regulatory compliance, licensing and registration, along with responsible gaming. 

Murren’s letter concluded by stating: ”This has been a year of transitions, and we appreciate how challenging this can be. We believe we have the best leadership in place and know that each day we will be showing the best of what Resorts World has to offer our guests.”
